Associate Professor Charunee Hongcharu is one of the not many female conductors of
Thailand Music circle who has a distinguished performance of conducting in the Opening and
Closing ceremonies of the 13th Asian Games in Thailand in 1998. She has become more widely
known for her conducting of Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 in the big concert in celebrating the
120th anniversary of Thai-Japanese diplomatic relationships.
Besides she has conducted other compositions continually both in Thailand and abroad.
Hongcharu graduated with a Bachelor of Fine and Applied Arts degree, First class Honors, Gold
Medal Award in Music from Chulalongkorn University and a Master Degree in Music from
Columbia University in New York. While studying in the U.S.A., she also attended the Juilliard
School of Music and Westminster Choir College.
After returning to Thailand, she has an opportunity to further study in conducting opera and
orchestra including composing for the musicals at Tisch School of Arts, NYU.

Currently, she is an Associate Professor at the Department of Dramatic Arts at Faculty of Arts,
Chulalongkorn University teaching Musical Theatre, Singing for Theatre, Music and Sound in
Theatre, and Speech & Voice Training.
She has also been the Music Director of the Bangkok Combined Choir for about 20 years and
has conducted Choirs for various groups: the Bangkok Gospel Men’s Choir, Christian Chorus of
Thailand, The Faculty of Arts chorus, Chulalongkorn University, The Medical Doctor
Chulalongkorn University chorus and The Office of the Civil Service Commission Chorus.
